Our Fledgling Inventory

The MSU Map Library now has a fledgling inventory of licensed online digital topographic maps. Currently containing a single entry (Ethiopia JOGs at 1:250,000) over the summer you can watch this list grow with new entries!

MSU Libraries' first hosted-and-served set of digital topographic maps is of Ethiopia mapped at a scale of 1:250,000, prepared by the US Defense Mapping Agency Joint Operations Graphic. The finding aid linked from the library catalog displays the sheet boundaries and provides links to download jpg previews, 400 ppi TIF files, and 400 ppi GeoTIFF files.

Landscan is a world population dataset at approximately 1 km resolution (30" X 30"). It represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours). The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match...
