Three students enjoy the MSU Library's new Short Edition Kiosk

A sweet new kiosk at the MSU Main Library dispenses stories like candy from a vending machine. Located on the main floor near the south (Red Cedar) entrance, the dispenser offers a new reading option for MSU Library users and serves as a new publishing venue for students, faculty, and staff. The kiosk provides free on-demand printing of short prose and poetry, offering users a choice of one-minute, three-minute, or five-minute stories printed on paper a bit wider than a typical receipt. Dean of Libraries Joseph Salem said the kiosk opens up new opportunities for the MSU Libraries to...

"There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published." -- Victor Green, in the preface to the 1941 edition

From 1936 to 1966 Victor Green, and later his widow Alma Green, edited the Negro Motorist Green Book, which listed businesses that would serve black travelers without harassment or prejudice.  Race or ethnicity of the business owner was not a criteria for inclusion in the listings.  We examined 9 editions of the Green Book, and created a map of the 86 Detroit businesses listed.  Enjoy these interactive maps to learn more about them.  Running...

The FAMGA

Although there’s not really any discernible agreement as to when “initialism” or acronyms first became mainstream, the somewhat frightful acronym FAMGA is certainly outperforming OTP ("One True Pairing") at the moment.

FAMGA is an acronym for Facebook Inc (FB), Apple Inc (AAPL), Microsoft Corp (MSFT), Google (GOOG) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN), the five biggest stocks in the Nasdaq. Today, the FAMGA make up an astonishing 40% of the NASDAQ 100 company index.

The FAMGA family phenomena is also enormously profitable. Combined, the frightful five have a market-cap of roughly $4...

Jobs Indeed

There are, for all intents and purposes, four types of analytics positions in the U.S; data analyst, business analyst (BA), data scientist, and business intelligence analyst (BIA). Since these position titles tend to be fluid over time, there’s a need to continually re-identify the skill requirements for professionals in each of these areas.

Fortunately, several researchers have taken inventory of some of the most desirable analytics skills sought by employers between December 2016 and February 2017.

Verma et al. (2019) used content analysis to examine a sample of 1,235 job...

The CRAZY Inverted Yield Curve
September 09, 2019 - 4:38:00 pm (America/Detroit)
Blog: Business Library News

“The yield curve does not cause a recession in my framework. The yield curve is just an elegant way to summarize sentiment in the economy.” - Campbell Harvey

An inverted yield curve marks a point where short-term investments in U.S. Treasury bonds pay more than long-term ones. When they flip, or invert, it’s widely regarded as a bad sign for the economy.

Facts in August

The rate of the 10-year bond fell below the 1-year bond
The rate of the 2-year bond did not close above the 10-year bond (flat)
The 10-year bond rate has closed less than the 3-month bond rate every day... Continue reading "The CRAZY Inverted Yield Curve"...
