Michigan births by unmarried women trended down slightly in 2016, both in raw numbers and in percentage of total births, according to state numbers.
Of 113,374 births in Michigan, 47,042 were by unmarried women, down 1,384 or 3% from the previous year. Unmarried moms comprised 41.5 percent of new moms in 2016, down from 42.7 percent in 2015.
In general, unmarried new mothers tend to be younger, less educated and have lower incomes than married mothers. Click here for more details on the statewide data.
Michigan's 83 counties are ranked by the percentage of births in 2016 that were by unmarried women. The numbers come from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services.
The ranking begins with the counties with the lowest percentages.
